A catechism is a fancy word for a set of questions and answers about Bible doctrines. It is a simple, effective way to teach our children (and adults) the BIG truths of the gospel. Join us in 2024 as we jump into these questions and find out the truth that awaits us!
New City Catechism 2024
Week 18: May 6-12
Question 17: Will God allow our disobedience and idolatry to go unpunished? No, God is righteously angry with our sins and will punish them both in this life, and in the life to come.
Ephesians 5:5–6
For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.
For the Parent’s Heart:
- This may be a difficult topic to discuss, but it is necessary for our children to hear the warnings of Scripture as well as the promises.
- How can you discuss the coming wrath of God in an age appropriate way? This article may help.
- Pray that your children will understand the holiness of God, the reality of His wrath poured out on sinners, and the good news of salvation.
Ask Your Children:
- Have you ever had consequences for disobedience? Why is that a good thing?
- What would happen if you were the judge who decided on punishments for criminals?
- Why is it good that God is a righteous and holy judge?
Reminders:
- Be sure to check out the playlists below or in the app for helpful songs that your family can listen to for help memorizing these questions and answers.
- How can you incorporate this question into your normal daily routine? Post it on a mirror in the bathroom, in the kitchen, or in the car where everyone can see it.
- Bedtime is a great opportunity to review this question and have discussions about it. If you have trouble remembering, set a reminder on your phone or ask your child to remind you to review this week’s question.
