Words of Grace – Fellowship with Jesus Our Lord

Words of Grace – Fellowship with Jesus Our Lord

When I was a young Christian, I learned to meet with the Lord everyday through reading my Bible and praying. This was called “fellowship” with God. Over the years I have tried to consistently do this in the mornings. I have benefited greatly from this practice.

But when 1 Corinthians 1:9 says, “God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord”, it means God, by his grace, has called us to share in the life of Christ.

God awakens our souls to himself and his grace in the new birth. As new people with new hearts, the life of Christ is being formed in us (Galatians 4:19). We are being conformed to him (Romans 8:29). Christ is in us (Colossians 1:27). Christ abides in us, and we abide in him (John 15:4-5).

Fellowship with the Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, is more than a meeting with him to read and pray (though meeting with him is vital to fellowshipping with him). It is sharing, partaking of, and participating in his life.

So, when you meet with the Lord for Bible reading and prayer…

…remember that you are sharing in his life, he is in you, and you are in him.

…seek to conform your life (thinking, desiring, deciding) to him.

…take what you gain in that time with him into your experiences that day.

…rely upon his life in you, not your practice of time with him.

When God came near to us, he did so by sending his Son to become a man that we, by faith, would have fellowship with him. Ask God to awaken your soul to the reality of the shared life of Christ.

I look forward to worshiping with you Sunday.
