Singing to God Together in 2026 – Words of Grace Blog – January 16, 2026

True spiritual engagement that leads to singing the praises of God during Sunday worship is a gift of the Holy Spirit. But there are some things we can think about when coming to church that the Holy Spirit may use to enhance our singing.

This is the third Words of Grace on a practical aspect of our congregational life and corporate worship. You can go back and read about our praying together and sermon listening.

What a gift singing is. Music is a common grace, one shared by all people. But when the gift of music is joined with the joy of saving grace and the gathering of believers in Christ, the result is robust singing to the Lord and about the Lord. This is what we look forward to on Sundays at Grace Community Church.

Here are some heart-preparation steps for singing to God together in 2026.

Make corporate worship a priority in your life.
This includes church attendance and more. When you attend church on Sunday, make the worship of God the priority. Of all the things we do on a Sunday at Grace, the worship of God is primary. That’s because Christ is preeminent.

I hope when you come to church you connect with people who love you. I pray you benefit from Bible study. I am going to do my best to preach a sermon that helps you know and love God. It would be great if you like the music. But the most important part of the Sunday gathering is the worship of God our Father, through Jesus the Son, in the Holy Spirit. All other aspects of Sunday morning serve that purpose.

Remember that singing is a vital part of worship.
The worship of God includes many elements. Prayer, confession, submission, hearing God’s word, and even building up one another in the faith are all parts of our worship of God. Singing is included.

The people at the front of the Worship Hall are not performers; they are participants in singing who help us sing. We all, as a congregation, are the primary singers. So, as you come to worship, plan to sing.

Look at the words to the songs we sing.
Songs, hymns, and spiritual songs carry the treasure of God’s truth in musical form to our souls. By them we declare great things about God and receive great grace from him.

You may have noticed that sometimes I turn my body slightly toward the congregation and look at our people as we sing. That’s because I find the songs helpful for our mutual encouragement in faith. Keep the words of the songs in mind and heart.

Pray for people as we sing.
Every Sunday at Grace there are people among us who are not yet converted to Christ. Some are coming to church with deep fears and doubts. Some have sinned and need to be set right with God through confession and assurance of forgiveness. Others are just bored and have little affection for Christ from which to live.

The songs that the church has sung throughout the generations present the gospel, speak comfort, call to repentance, and lift the eyes to the one living and true God who is also the lover of our souls. Pray with me that congregational singing will speak to everyone so we will all by faith give true worship to God.
