Oct 09, 2015 Words of Grace – Comfort in Weakness
We usually have two responses to the experience of being weak. One is to ask God to remove it. The other is to compensate for weakness with strength. What happens for the Christian when weakness simply will not go away?
The Apostle Paul called his weakness a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7). We don’t know exactly what this thorn was, but we do know that it caused him enough pain, perplexity, and feelings of helplessness that he prayed three times for it to leave him. Perhaps one of the most sobering omissions in the Bible is a verse that says God took the thorn out of his flesh.
One of the most comforting verses in the Bible is the one that says Christ spoke to Paul in his weakness (not after he overcame). “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Comfort in unrelenting weakness is not found in a guarantee that it will be removed in this life or that we will overcome it with strength. Comfort is in the promise of Christ’s sustaining grace and his power in our weakness.
