Jun 27, 2014 Words of Grace – The Pilgrim’s Progress Summer Study
Over 300 years ago, John Bunyan sat in a prison cell and wrote about endurance in the Christian life. He had been sentenced for preaching the gospel without a license from the established church. He was experiencing understandable bouts with doubt, emotional stress, and depression. He looked to Jesus who endured the suffering of the cross. From Jesus, he found faith to stay faithful.
The book Bunyan wrote is “The Pilgrim’s Progress.” Many believe that Bunyan drew his inspiration for the book from Hebrews 11, the chapter that describes the people of old who lived by faith in God. No doubt Bunyan had Hebrews 12 in mind as he saw the journey before him, and he longed to be faithful until the end. “The Pilgrim’s Progress” is an allegory that represents Bunyan’s own experience.
During our time in Hebrews at Grace, we are approaching Hebrews 12 and the great encouragement to run with endurance the race that is set before us. To help us along the way, we will be read Bunyan’s classic together as a congregation during the month of July. I hope you will join us. I believe that, if you do, your faith will be strengthened for the journey ahead.
