Whole-Body Wisdom – Words of Grace Blog – March 28, 2025

The “whole-body” craze includes everything from workouts to skin care to wellness centers. This week as I read Proverbs 4, I heard the call to whole-body wisdom. To stay on the way of wisdom requires a commitment of the whole body.

First, there is the mind. The physical brain in the place of the mind, our ability to think. Proverbs 4:20 says to be attentive to wise words. Hear, listen, read, and consider the words God has graciously given us in the Bible. Here we will find the wisdom that leads to salvation and that guides our lives as we move from dawn to the noonday light of Christ (Proverbs 4:18). If you want to remain on the way of wisdom, wake yourself up and pay attention to the word of God.

Second, we have a heart. The Spirit of God has given us a heart transplant. Now we watch over this new heart with all diligence to keep it filled to overflowing with the wisdom of Christ who is our life (Proverbs 4:23). If you want to stay in the way of wisdom, guard your heart from straying and keep it free for Christ.

Third, we have mouths to speak. Proverbs 4:24 tells us to put away crooked speech and devious talk from our mouths. Wise people know that they can talk their way into foolishness by repeating foolish words and ideas. The mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart. And what we speak can become the pattern of our thoughts. If you want to remain on the path of wisdom, speak wisely.

Fourth, we have eyes with which to fix our gaze (Proverbs 4:25). Our gaze is to be directly ahead, fixed on the goal of Christlikeness and Christ’s glory. Look to the One who stands before you and calls you to come to him. If you want to walk wisely, keep Christ in sight.

Fifth, we walk with feet that follow the wisdom we have considered, loved, and let shape our words and light our path (Proverbs 4:26-27). We follow Christ who calls us to everyday obedience, keeping in step with his Spirit.

Before Paul wrote that we are to present our bodies as living sacrifices to God (Romans 12:1), he thought through how each part of the human body is redeemed by Christ and engaged in the pursuit of wisdom on the path to glory. He concluded that the whole body should be given back to God alive and consecrated to him. This is true wisdom.

Think on these things this weekend. I look forward to seeing you Sunday as we worship Christ and continue in the book of Proverbs.
